Dr. Scheiman visits CABVI for Educational Session on Vision Evaluations after TBI

UTICA, NY – The Central Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (CABVI) held a special continuing education event on Monday featuring Dr. Mitchell Scheiman, a renowned expert in vision therapy and rehabilitation. Dr. Scheiman discussed the critical role of vision evaluations in the treatment of concussions and traumatic brain injuries (TBI).

The event aimed to educate healthcare providers on the latest screening tools and techniques that can be integrated into their evaluations for patients with mild to moderate TBI. Dr. Scheiman provided valuable insights into how these tools can enhance the accuracy of diagnoses and improve patient outcomes.

“An eye exam is vital after a concussion or TBI to evaluate for visual dysfunctions,” said Dr. Brittnee Livingston, an occupational therapist at CABVI.  “A comprehensive eye exam can evaluate for these areas such as double vision, eye movement disorders, light sensitivity, and visual field loss. Early intervention is important to prevent long-term problems that could impact quality of life. CABVI can be a partner in care in this area to provide therapy if an eye doctor recommends it after a complete eye exam.”

Livingston holds a specialized certification in remedial vision to properly evaluate and treat these conditions.

The event also allowed members of the local medical community to connect with fellow healthcare providers and explore potential collaborations.

Dr. Scheiman’s visit underscores CABVI’s commitment to expanding partnerships with healthcare providers and increasing access to comprehensive care for individuals affected by TBI. By equipping providers with the necessary tools and knowledge, CABVI aims to enhance the quality of care and support available to patients in Central New York.
