Camp Counselor I
Under the direction of the Adaptive Sports and Recreation Manager, this position is responsible for providing a positive learning experience to children who are blind and visually impaired through participating in a variety of sports, recreational and rehabilitative activities.
Key Job Elements
Participation in conducting general overnight camp program.
Cooperation with the entire staff, fellow counselors, and administration in working together for the welfare of the campers.
Coaches campers in keeping the campsite neat and clean and all equipment and supplies in good order.
Assists in daily camp activities in areas such as adaptive sports / recreation and rehabilitation.
Often participating alongside the camper dealing with issues related to overcoming fear, building self-confidence, trying new experiences, and achieving success.
Works with campers to help them establish friendships and positive relationships with fellow campers and others at camp.
Builds a quick rapport with parents of campers to ensure that they are comfortable with the camp experience providing information, emotional support and confidence in their role and the camp program.
Completes camper assignments and gathers research data as required.
Completes all other duties assigned.
SUPERVISORY SKILLS
Ensure that assigned camper is supervised at all times and maintain a safe and enjoyable camp environment.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Must be able to communicate and work with groups of various age, skills and ability levels and provide necessary instruction to campers. Must be able to work as a member of a team.
REASONING ABILITY
Must have ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Physical endurance to engage in recreational activities requiring prolonged standing, bending, stooping, eye-hand coordination, & manual dexterity to manipulate equipment. Ability to serve as a positive role model. Must be physically fit and display some degree of sport aptitude.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
All counselors will need to be available to stay for the duration of the program, as this is an overnight experience. Food will be provided. Daily exposure to the varying weather conditions and outdoor elements.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school student and above. Previous experience working with children with disabilities preferred. Experience working in a camp setting a plus.
