Low Vision Care in Central New York
Millions of Americans have low vision, which is characterized by a visual acuity of 20/70 or worse, and cannot be improved with glasses, contacts, pharmaceutical therapy or surgery. As vision deteriorates, those affected often find it difficult to accomplish everyday tasks, such as reading, recognizing faces, cooking, driving, and differentiating colors.
At CABVI, a team of optometrists, specialists and therapists work together to develop a plan that allows our consumers throughout Central New York to maintain their independence and quality of life. The goal is to help people make the most of their remaining vision.
What to expect from a low vision evaluation
At our Utica and Syracuse facilities, CABVI’s low vision optometrists will complete a comprehensive low vision evaluation using some of the latest diagnostic testing equipment. This allows us to develop a clear understanding of the impact of your vision changes. Testing will measure the ability to see in low-contrast situations, and establish field of sight, visual acuity, and lighting needs.
The optometrists may prescribe low vision optical aids, including hand-held magnifiers, specialized reading spectacles, specialized lighting, and methods to reduce glare, electronic video magnification machines, and more.
Prior to your visit, we will have received your medical history and most current vision exam information from your primary eye care provider.
When coming to an appointment at one of our Central New York locations, please bring insurance cards, a list of current medications, eyeglasses and a list of any questions you may have.
Please note, your appointment may take up to two hours as you may need to take a variety of tests and meet with members of our team.
